Gary Allen, General Vice President, Western Territory for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), is the new Western Area Executive Board Member for the Maritime Trades Department.
Brother Allen, who comes from a Machinists family, began his IAM career when he was initiated into Local 794 in 1979 as he worked at the General Electric aircraft engine facility in Albuquerque, NM.
Within two years, Allen was elected Area Steward and two years later he had become the Chief Steward overseeing the activities of all shop stewards on all shifts at the GE site.
By the time he was 24 in 1985, Allen was the local’s President and Directing Business Representative. In 1991, he became an IAM Grand Lodge Representative. Five years later, he was appointed Territorial Organizing Leader for the Western Territory where he coordinated the region’s organizing activities.
Starting in 2003, he was the Western Territory Chief of Staff, holding that post until his election in 2009 as General Vice President, Western Territory.
Allen and his wife of 39 years, Donna, have two sons, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.
“Brother Allen brings a great background of working for his members to our board,” noted MTD President Michael Sacco. “We look forward to his involvement with the MTD.”
