Mission

A constitutionally mandated department of the AFL-CIO, the Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO has a special interest in preserving a robust U.S. maritime industry by promoting a comprehensive legislative agenda and in educating Congress, the administration, the international community and the American public about the benefits of this vitally important industry.

A strong supporter of organized labor and the rights of workers worldwide, the Department strives, through its nationwide network of Port Maritime Councils, to give maritime workers and those employed in allied industries an effective grass roots presence. As we, our Port Maritime Councils and our affiliates well know, “There is Strength in Unity.”
