Mark A. Clements, Jr.

Executive Secretary-Treasurer

Mark Clements became Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO, on April 1, 2023. He was previously named the Administrator of the Department in November 2021.

Clements grew up in a strong Labor household, raised by a chief shop steward and an AFSCME dump truck driver. He comes to the MTD from the Seafarers International Union where he worked for nine years as Assistant Director for Communications and Content Curator.

Clements graduated cum laude from Tulane University with a BA in English and Religious Studies in 2009. Additionally, he holds an MFA in Fiction from Colorado State University (2012) and an MLIS in Archival Studies from University of Pittsburgh (2013). Mark’s interests in history and research have served him well in Labor, empowering him to situate current events in their larger contexts.

Before becoming active in the Labor Movement, Clements worked as an adjunct lecturer, a market research analyst, and copywriter. He formerly sat on the Montgomery County, Maryland Historic Preservation Commission and still remains active in local advocacy campaigns in his home of Silver Spring, Maryland.

When he isn’t fighting for American and Canadian maritime workers, Clements can be found attending concerts and appreciating historic architecture around the D.C. area with his husband Fan.
