
National President J. David Cox of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the newest member of the MTD Executive Board. AFGE joined the MTD in June as the department’s 22nd affiliate.
Cox has served as the head of AFGE since being elected at the union’s convention in August 2012. After initiating his healthcare career in 1970, Cox became a registered nurse in 1983 and started a public-sector career with the Veterans Administration.
In September 2006, he became the national secretary-treasurer of AFGE.
The North Carolina native is the chair of the AFL-CIO Union Veterans Council (to which the MTD belongs) and the executive committee for the AFL-CIO Department for Professional Employees. He is a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council and vice president of the North Carolina State AFL-CIO.
He is a graduate of the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in North Carolina.
