Boilermaker Gary Aycock took the assignment to represent the Hawaii Ports Maritime Council knowing that the only way this could take his career was down. In fact, the “only” up to the mission was the fact that the PMC had raised $1,367 for the Special Olympics Hawaii and he had to follow though.

The mission: Scale from the roof down the side of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

On November 2, Brother Aycock, a member of Local 627, received his safety instructions, donned the gear, and went over the edge to the cheers of hundreds of Special Olympics participants and volunteers as well as his fellow union members. In a matter of minutes, he was safely on the ground and being congratulated.

PMC Executive Secretary-Treasurer Hazel Galbiso noted this is probably the most visible of the several public service projects tackled by the council. She said the council was fully behind Aycock’s efforts.
