On Workers Memorial Day and Ahead of May Day, AFL-CIO Launches Coast-to-Coast Events in Nationwide Activation

The nation’s largest labor federation will mobilize working people across the country to join picket lines, marches and protests and organize fellow union members on economic issues

(Washington, D.C.)—The AFL-CIO, which represents nearly 15 million workers and 65 affiliated unions, has launched a nationwide activation campaign on Workers Memorial Day and ahead of International Workers Day to engage working people around attacks on their rights and the crisis of rising costs.

The campaign will advance a vision of a “worker-centered America” across the country, launching ahead of two days that have a deep history for the AFL-CIO and the labor movement. Drawing from that tradition, the AFL-CIO will support working families to take action at their union halls, in the streets and in their communities, as well as to respond to the threats of the moment, including rising costs, attacks on immigrant and federal workers, and the erosion of hard-fought protections for health and safety.

“For the labor movement, Workers Memorial Day and May Day aren’t just days of reflection—they are days of demand,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler. “Amid attacks on our health and safety, our civil rights, and our very freedom to organize, we are standing up for a worker-centered vision of America. From now through November, the AFL-CIO, our state and local labor movements, and allies across the country will be in the streets and at worksites to peacefully engage our co-workers and neighbors on the issues at stake in the next election so we can ensure that everyone can vote and every vote is counted and unify working people around our economic demands. This week and for the months to come, we will continue to fight for our vision of a worker-centered America.”

Today, the labor movement will observe Workers Memorial Day, honoring those who suffered injury, illness or lost their lives on the job. State and local labor councils will hold commemorations, remembrances, vigils, religious services, rallies and actions to defend workers’ health and safety protections. On International Workers Day (May Day) and throughout the rest of the week, events will include labor-hosted rallies, marches, protests, concerts, picnics, festivals, trainings and town halls and collaboration with community and movement partners to support thousands more local events. The labor councils will also join picket lines and, on Saturday, knock on doors and make phone calls to other union members to talk with them about soaring costs and the direction of the country.
