The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) just announced its list of 2024 designees for its Centers of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education. This list is meant to help the U.S. maritime industry in developing a highly skilled workforce, with a focus on expanding career opportunities.

Among the 32 designees were two facilities operated by MTD affiliates: the Seafarers Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship and the Calhoon MEBA Engineering School. Both facilities are located in the state of Maryland, providing world-class training to mariners for decades.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said in the accompanying DOT press release: “Our country depends on a highly-skilled mariner workforce to strengthen both our economy and our national security. The 32 Centers of Excellence we’re designating today will promote training opportunities outside of traditional four-year degree programs and will bring more Americans into these great maritime careers.”

“Our Centers of Excellence designations recognize the high standards of maritime education and training provided by these organizations,” said Maritime Administrator Ann Phillips. “These institutions play a critical role in providing domestic mariners with the expertise needed to best serve the maritime industry.”

The Maritime Trades Department congratulates both the Seafarers and the MEBA on receiving these designations, and hopes that both facilities continue to receive the recognition they have so roundly deserved.
