Speakers from the U.S-flag maritime industry, the U.S. military and the government will be among those presenting their ideas on how America’s Merchant Marine will play a vital role in the recovery of the nation’s economy when the Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO Executive Board meets February 21 and 22, 2013, in Orlando, FL.
Among the 11 speakers scheduled to address the two-day gathering will be Matthew Cox, President and CEO of Matson, Inc.; Fred Harris, President of General Dynamics NASSCO Shipyard; RADM Mark H. Buzby, commander of the Military Sealift Command; General William Fraser, commander of the U.S. Transportation Command; and Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor Seth Harris.
The sessions will take place in the Ireland Room of the Buena Vista Palace Hotel, 1900 Buena Vista Drive, Lake Buena Vista, FL. MTD President Michael Sacco will call the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. (EST) each day. The audience will include labor officials and maritime business representatives.
In addition to Fred Harris, Buzby and Fraser, the other scheduled speakers for Thursday, February 21, include Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie; RDML Joseph Servidio, Assistant Commandant Prevention Policy for the U.S. Coast Guard; and Stephen Cotton, Acting Secretary General of the International Transport Workers’ federation.
Joining Cox and Secretary Harris at the MTD Executive Board on Friday, February 22, are AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka; Michael Stotz, President and Managing Director of the AFL-CIO Investment Trust Corporation; and Fred Myers, Executive Director and CEO of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance.
The Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO is composed of 23 international unions and 21 port maritime councils in the United States and Canada representing more than 5 million working men and women.
