International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) General President Emeritus Joseph J. Nigro passed away October 24. He was 68 years old.

Brother Nigro served several years on the MTD Executive Board as the SMART representative before he retired as the union’s leader in 2015.

“Joe Nigro always had the interest of his members first and foremost,” recalled MTD President Michael Sacco. “I enjoyed our time working together at the MTD and on the AFL-CIO Executive Council. He will be remembered and missed.”

Nigro was a member of Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local 17 from Boston. He worked his way through the union becoming its international president in 2011. That same year, working with then-United Transportation Union President Mike Futhey, he oversaw the merger of the two unions to create SMART. He was SMART’s first president.
