U.S. Navy veteran Pete Buttigieg was sworn in February 3 as the new U.S. Secretary of Transportation.

Buttigieg previously served as mayor of South Bend, IN. He ran for president in the early 2020 Democratic primaries.

Within Buttigieg’s jurisdiction at the Department of Transportation is the U.S. Maritime Administration. During his January 21 confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee, the Biden appointee reiterated his support for the Jones Act, the nation’s freight cabotage law.

“We welcome aboard and look forward to working with Secretary Buttigieg,” stated MTD President Michael Sacco. “As an Afghani war veteran, he has seen firsthand how the U.S. merchant marine delivers the goods to our armed forces around the world.”
