Members of the Puerto Rico Ports Maritime Council offloaded earlier
this month more than 6,000 bilingual books destined for students
around the commonwealth.
The effort is part of BookWaves, a coalition of unions, U.S.-flag
shipping companies and non-profit organizations to donate more than
100,000 books dealing with science, technology, engineering and math
(STEM); social and emotional learning; and pleasure reading to
students in Puerto Rico, Alaska and Guam. The project launched in
October.
Working through MTD-affiliated American Federation of Teachers and
Seafarers International Union, this recent shipment was delivered by
Crowley Maritime from the U.S. mainland. (Union-contracted TOTE and
Matson also participate.)
The Asociacion de Maestros de Puerto Rico will handle distribution of
these books during March.
