The MTD welcomes its newest executive board member as Joseph Sellers will represent the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART).
Sellers succeeds Joseph Nigro who stepped down from the MTD board at the same time that he retired as General President of SMART. Sellers took over the helm of SMART on May 1.
A 35-year member of his union, Sellers began his apprenticeship with the then-Sheet Metal Workers International Association’s Local 19 in Philadelphia in 1980. He was elected to the local’s executive board in 1994. By 2002, he was its president and business manager.
In August 2009, the Philadelphia native was elected as the Sheet Metal Workers 11th General Vice President. Within two years, the union’s general executive council elected him General Secretary-Treasurer – a position he maintained when the Sheet Metal Workers and United Transportation Union merged to create SMART in 2014.
Sellers’ father was a Sheet Metal Workers member for 55 years – 30 of them serving as a local union officer.
