The United States Senate on Dec. 18 confirmed the nomination of Stephen Carmel as U.S. Maritime Administrator.
As previously reported, his nomination had been widely supported throughout the U.S. maritime industry, including by the SIU.
A U.S. Merchant Marine Academy graduate, Carmel sailed as a vessel master and then worked as an executive with Maersk Line, Limited, and with U.S. Marine Management. During his Senate hearing Oct. 22, he voiced strong backing for the Jones Act, the Maritime Security Program, and cargo preference laws.
Shortly after Carmel’s confirmation, SIU President David Heindel congratulated him and noted that the union looks forward to working with him in his new role.
