Michael Coleman, incoming General President of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART), is the newest member of the Maritime Trades Department’s Executive Board.
Brother Coleman takes the seat formerly occupied by Joe Sellers, the outgoing General President of SMART.
Coleman first joined SMART as an apprentice in 1985. After graduating to journeyman status, he then was elected to SMART Local 33’s Executive Board in 2000 and became its President and Business Manager in 2012. In 2018, he joined the SMART General Executive Council as 9th General Vice President.
In September 2019, Coleman became Director of Business and Management Relations. Not long after, he transitioned into the role of Assistant to the General President. In addition to these responsibilities, Brother Coleman also served as chair of Local 33’s Pension Funds, as a trustee of the Sheet Metal Workers’ National Pension Fund, and as President of SMART’s Great Lakes States Council.
MTD President Heindel welcomed Brother Coleman onto the Board, in addition to thanking Brother Sellers for his many years of service to his union, the MTD, and the Labor Movement in general.
The Maritime Trades Department takes great pride in its affiliation with SMART and looks forward to working with Brother Coleman.
